Approach
This animation features a total of 6 different characters, each of them carefully thougth out. One main characteristic all of them share, is the fact that they have no face, in order to represent not just their actual persona, but a group of people, allowing the audience to relate to the plot easier. The King (of Spades), the Queen (of Hearts) and the 2 men on the train, for instance, represent the Portuguese people and the desire for freedom, while the Jack (of Clubs) and the PIDE police represent the regime.
As for the environment, this short story is divided into 3 different settings. Firstly, there's the train station in which the action begins, which was carefully modeled to accurately represent Lisbon's Santa Apolónia station in the 1950's. One of the main elements of this environment is the train in which the characters get in. This train was also modeled to resemble “Foguete”, the 1953's train that traveled from Lisbon to Porto.
Secondly, we have the bar, in which the action in the "Card World" begins. This bar was modeled with the purpose of representing an old cartoonish bar with a corolful theme and vintage feel. The third and final setting is the maze that connects these two worlds. Both the bar and the maze's final renders use shaders to mantain the cartoonish look of the card world, where the protagonists are the King, the Queen and the Jack.

Descarrilados was a team project exhibited at Escola Secundária Marquês de Pombal, as part of a 25th of April celebration, marking the 50th year of the Portuguese Revolution. The story focuses on showcasing the life of Portuguese people under the conservative regime of António de Oliveira Salazar, in a less serious tone and with some fantasy to it, adressing some of the prohibitions at the time that would be ridiculous nowadays, like how it was forbidden to play cards on trains, kiss in public and be seen in groups.
This story unfolds on a cold night of November, in Lisbon, 1950. The streets are quiet, there are only a few people still outside, and who knows how many are Salazar's spies. It seems paranoid, but the truth is, if you crossed the line, they always had a way to find out. But this night felt different, two men were determined to fight the regime. This night, they found out how dangerous a simple game of cards can be, how a conversation can influence and change the minds of people, and why this conservative leader fought so hard to prevent it.
